Objective: To study the variations of the Total T3 in interventions with extracorporeal circulation (CEC) during a period of 5 days comparing the results obtained in the cases of bypass aortocoronary (BP) with those of cardiac valvular substitution (RVC).

Methods: A prospective study, without randomiser, selecting, in the case of RVC to 25 patients, 11 males and 14 females and in the case of BP to 25 males. They are excluded those that present clinical or analytically plasma thyroid hormones levels low or high. They were carried out 5 taking of blood. On 1st, the previous day to the surgery; on 2nd, during the CEC, in the moment of maximum hypothermia; on 3rd, to the arrival to the unit medical intensive; on 4th, the next day of the surgery; on 5th, five days later of surgery. The method statistical employee was the Test t Student among the different extractions accepting as significant the values from lowers than p to 0.05.

Results: The results were in the case of RVC of 0.79 ± 0.14, 0.58 ± 0.15, 0.63 ± 0.12, 0.46 ± 0.14 and 0.63 ± 0.20. In the case of BP they were of 0.93 ± 0.26, 0.49 ± 0.16, 0.56 ± 0.18, 0.44 ± 0.20 and 0.76 ± 0.33 The statistical analysis demonstrated a significant descent of the values during and after the intervention. However, the values ascended until the almost normalisation in the case of those intervened by BP (p = 0.036). The ascent was inferior in the case of RVC (p = 0.0004).

Conclusions: A significant descent of the values of total T3 is demonstrated during and after an intervention with CEC. However to the five days later, they are normalised much more in the case of a BP that in the case of a RVC.
