Objective: To study the variations in the levels of TSH in interventions with extracorporeal circulation (CEC) during a period of 5 days comparing the results obtained in the cases of bypass aortocoronary (BP) and those of cardiac valvular substitution (RVC).

Methods: A study prospective, without randomiser, selecting, in the case of RVC to 25 patients, 11 males and 14 females, and in the case of BP to 25 males. They are excluded those that present clinical or analytically plasma thyroid hormones levels low or high. They were carried out 5 takings of blood. On 1st, the previous day to the surgery; on 2nd, during the CEC, in the moment of maximum hypothermia; on 3rd, to the arrival to the unit medical intensive; on 4th, the following day of the surgery; on 5th, five days later of surgery. The method statistical employee was the Test t Student among the different extractions accepting as significant the values from lowers than p to 0.05.

Results: The results of the different takings were in RVC of 2.76 ± 1,92, 5.05 ± 5.50, 4.85 ± 3.42, 1.45 ± 1.30 and 3.68 ± 3.01. In the case of BP they were of 1.80 ± 1,05, 2.18 ± 1.74, 2.14 ± 1.70, 1.05 ± 0.77 and 1.96 ± 1.13 The statistical analysis showed a significant increase of the values during and after the intervention. However, the values were normalised in the case of those intervened by BP (p = 0.29) and not in the case of RVC (p = 0.0308).

Conclusions: A significant ascent of the values of TSH is demonstrated during and after an intervention with CEC. However they are normalised on 5th day in the case of a BP but not in the case of a RVC.
