Round Table V:
State of the Art in Myocardial Ischaemia

   Ischemic Heart Disease is the major death cause in the occidental world. Approximately one out of 4 people with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) died as a consequence of this. Half of them died before hospital arrival.

   This leads cardiologists not only to treat patients but also spread out the treatment and prevention concepts.

   In the last years, we have witnessed overwhelming advances in the management of acute ischemic syndrome (AIS). The big multicenter trials have confirmed the benefits of certain drug groups in mortality decrease and event recurrence and as a consequence, rehospitalization.

   Nowadays, inside the AIS we basically recognize two types: with or without persistent ST elevation.

   The AMI type is in the first category, whereas the AIS without persistent ST elevation may be, according to on the rise of myocardial necrosis markers, unstable angina or AMI without Q wave. As part of the section "Reperfusion Era", the 2000 guides dedicate a whole section to the AIS, which indicates the importance of the subject.

   We will start this workshop with Dr. Miguel Moretti from Brazil, who will develop the topic "IIb IIIa glycoprotein roll"
Dr. Moretti is assistant physician of the Clinical Emergency Unit of Instituto del Corazón of the Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de San Pablo, Brazil. Assistant physician of the Clinical Emergency Unit of the Hospital Sirio Libanés, San Pablo, Brazil.

   After Dr. Moretti, Dr. Ari Timerman also from Brazil will inform us about the outstanding aspects of the low weight molecular heparin in the treatment of AIS.

   Dr. Ari Timerman is PhD in cardiology of the Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de San Pablo. Chief of the Emergency and Intensive Therapy Section of the Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiología. President of SBC-FUNCOR from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology.

   The following lecture will be in charge of Dr. John Field from USA, who will tell us the actual condition and perspective of the thrombolitics in the acute myocardial infarction.
